In this month’s spotlight section, we have a lovely guest blog post from Christine at Scattering Stars about her mermaid artwork and some tips for how you can create your own piece of mermaid art!
“In my ongoing attempts to make art fun again after burning out as a pro artist, I decided to explore the mediums I enjoyed so much in my childhood. I remembered that I used to get big coloring posters for Christmas, and would spend Christmas afternoon happily coloring with my markers. I had a lot of fun~ and on top of that, it was very zen~ so I decided to revisit the concept.
So, I got a new set of markers, the BIGGEST set I could find ~ I think there were 60 markers in it.
I couldn’t wait to try them all out!
Now, what to draw & color that would be FUN, and also colorful?
Something beautiful, something vibrant, something inspiring and enjoyable to me…
“Mermaids,” I thought gleefully, “A mermaid would be fun to draw ~ I could color it a million different colors!”
And it was fun!
I had a ball, coloring each of the little scales and hair strands and jewelry a different color on the mermaid!
inspiration and enjoyment
Mermaids light me up and make me smile ~ they’re so graceful, whimsical, ethereal, feminine.
And, since mermaids are listed as mysterious, elusive, mythic creatures, I feel free to interpret their image any way I like!
They can be sylphlike, intense, friendly, mysterious, dark, dangerous, beautiful, ugly, helpful, romantic, powerful…more fish-like, more princess-y, more banshee-ish~ whatever you want!
Total freedom! Total inspiration!
For this particular illustration, I envisioned a glamorous, brightly-colored wild sister of a mermaid, and set out to create it!
Doing this illustration made me feel so free ~ I found that I still adore drawing something intricate, wrapped in defined black lines and colored-in with a million jewel-like colors!
be free
Sound fun to do?
Ok, go ahead and do it!
Envision your mermaid ~ let it be for you and you alone! You can always throw it away or burn it, if you don’t want anyone else to see it.
Figure out which medium will be most enjoyable and expansive for you to do~ the one that will allow you to create your own perfectly-expressed mermaid spirit!
Ink, clay, paint, writing, photo art ~ doesn’t matter, just pick a medium that will let you have fun and really get your vision out into physical/material form!
Enjoy yourself and your wild + free expression, sweetie!”
